Reality can't compete...

The other day ,while watching an episode of HOUSE, I had another aha! moment. During this episode Doctors Chase & Cameron, who are a engaged, were arguing about wether or not Dr. Cameron should dispose of her late husbands sperm since they're about to be married. Dr. Chase thinks it would be like closing a chapter in Dr. Camerons past and showing faith in their relationship, while Dr. Cameron is afraid to let go and destroy the last part of her husband- someone she tried so hard to save but couldn't.
In the end Chase relents and comes to understand Cameron's POV and feelings and tells her not to destroy the sperm and they go on to have a fairy tale wedding. However, before the happy ending can take place, Dr. Cameron seeks out Dr. House as her sounding board for working through what to do about her situation. When talking about her fiance she says that Chase has a "romantic view of love that reality can't compete with."
I froze when I heard that line. It was like that one little phrase was directed at me and I knew instantly that I too, like Dr. Chase, had a view of love that most people don't think can exist. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Although I'm leaning toward a mixture of both. Its not a good thing when your expectations are to the extreme and you dismiss anyone who doesn't meet your critera exactly even if theirs a spark of interest. Yet, its a good thing because you believe that true love can conquer anything and if it's meant to be then it will be. So, the suppostion is that to have successful relationships a person needs some romantic visions of love but also be realistic in those ideals. However, the question of the day is...by letting go of an extra ordinary view of what love is are you lowering your standards?
